Barbara DeMarco Barrett

Barbara DeMarco-Barrett is author of Palm Springs Noir (Akashic). Her stories are in Orange County Noir, Coolest American Stories, 2022, USA Noir: Best of the Akashic Noir Series, Rock, and A Hard Place, Dark City Crime Mystery Magazine, and Literary Hatchet. She received a Distinguished Instructors award from UC-Irvine and is adjunct professor of creative writing at Chapman University and Saddleback College. Pen on Fire: A Busy Woman's Guide to Igniting the Writer Within, was a Los Angeles Times bestseller. For the last 24 years she has hosted a podcast Writers on Writing. For 23 of those years, the show broadcast on KUCI-FM. Her horror short story, “Sandman,”  came out in December 2024 in Becoming Nosferatu: Stories Inspired by Silent German Horror. She continues to do events for Palm Springs Noir (Akashic) and Pen on Fire: A Busy Woman’s Guide to Igniting the Writer Within (Harcourt; reissued by Mars Street Press).  She says, "Dorland always serves as inspiration for me. My essay, Dusk Therapy, began here and was inspired by how I hadn’t experienced darkness like this maybe ever."
