The Dorland Team
Over time, the faces may have changed, but the Dorland team remains a steadfast group of passionate individuals who are unwaveringly dedicated to supporting Dorland's artists and protecting the land, flora, and fauna as a tribute to their deep affection for the artist community and the environment.
Janice Cipriani-Willis
Executive Director and Board Member
Janice lives and works at Dorland Mountain Arts in Temecula. She began her art education by earning a B.A. in Fine Arts from CSULA and her work was shown at LA Artcore Gallery. Her current work has been inspired by watching people from all walks of life in situations that engender a range of human emotions. Janice is a Signature member of the National Watercolor Society and of Watercolor West. Original works and giclee reproductions are available and can be seen by appointment at Dorland Mountain Arts and at the Fallbrook Art Association Gallery in Fallbrook CA.
Robert Willis
Artist In Residency
A watercolorist, and a former Art Director and woodworking hobbyist, Robert Willis first came to Dorland as a working resident in the late 1980s and stayed on as artist-in-residence and caretaker. During the devastating fire of 2004, Robert parked his truck at the bottom of the hill, just across the way, and watched the seven original cottages burn, one-by-one.
You’ll see Robert about the retreat day to day, teaching watercolor workshops, and making beautiful hand-painted signs for trails and cottages. In a former life Robert lived in LA, had 6 kids, made art in France. Robert is married to our Executive Director Janice Cipriani-Willis.
Robert is often referred to as the Heart of Dorland by many who have visited over the years.
In Memory of Duchess
The Duchess of Dorland
We fondly remember Duchess, the beloved "colony dog" at Dorland, following a tradition that began with the Dorland dogs of the 1950s. Over the past twenty years, Shady, Buddy, and Leika have also held this special place in our hearts. Duchess continued this legacy, becoming a cherished companion to our Dorland Caretakers, Janice and Robert, as well as countless residents and visitors.
Duchess had a warm and enthusiastic spirit, often greeting visitors with a bark of joy. Her love for people was boundless, and she was always excited to meet new friends. If her welcome was a bit too enthusiastic, a gentle hand raised in a "stop sign" motion and her name said in a low voice would calm her down.
Known for her playful nature, Duchess sometimes "borrowed" shoes or personal items left on cottage porches. She had a unique charm and a mischievous streak that endeared her to all.
Duchess's presence at Dorland was a joy, and she will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
