Associate Artist Program


The Dorland Mountain Arts Associate Artist Program offers a unique opportunity for artists to immerse themselves in a creative community set amidst the beauty of Southern California's rolling hills. As an Associate Artist, you gain access to exclusive discounts, resources, networking opportunities, and the chance to showcase and sell your work through Dorland events and exhibitions. The program fosters collaboration and inspiration, encouraging artistic growth through shared experiences with like-minded individuals. 

Who Can Join Dorland's Associate Artist Program?

Anyone who is an artist or has a keen interest in the arts and wishes to connect with like-minded individuals is encouraged to join. Our membership includes visual artists, writers, musicians and a broad range of creatives.

Membership Has Its Perks

We invite you to join us at any of our events and experience all that Dorland has to offer. Becoming an Associate Artist means joining a unique, supportive community of artists who value creativity, connection, and place. Our Associate Artist program offers meaningful opportunities to engage with Dorland and enjoy a range of member benefits.

Discount On Residency

Dorland offers five cozy cottages for self-directed residencies ranging from one to six weeks. Associate Artists receive a 25% discount on up to two nights of a residency stay at Dorland.

Social Opportunities

Associate Artists are invited to monthly activities and informal gatherings that bring together members of the local creative community.

Events

Enjoy opportunities to exhibit and sell your work, participate in open studios, attend fundraisers, and connect with resident artists and fellow creatives through a variety of Dorland events.

Learn and Share

Take part in storytelling sessions, art displays, musical events, and other gatherings that highlight artists from a wide range of disciplines and encourage shared learning and exchange.

We’re so glad you’ve chosen to join our Associate Artists Program. Your participation helps sustain Dorland Mountain Arts and keeps the arts active and supported within our local community. By being part of this program, you are helping preserve a place where artists can create, connect, and find inspiration—and we’re truly grateful.

We encourage you to share Dorland with friends, fellow artists, and supporters who may be interested in becoming part of this community as well.

If you are joining with a family or couples membership, please note that each individual member must complete the membership form below so we can properly welcome everyone and keep our records up to date.

Before you fill out the form below, please read the Associate Artists Guidelines carefully. 


What to have ready before you fill in the membership form:


  • A headshot photo — File must be 10 MB or less.
  • About yourself and your artist interest:  A brief profile (150 words or less written in third person).
  • A sample of your artistic work (optional).
  • Associate Artist yearly membership fee: $100 individual, $150 family/couple 

A member of Dorland's staff will reach out soon after you have submitted the form with information and an invoice for your membership fee. Fees are collected at the beginning of each year and will be prorated for members who join mid-year.

Associate Artist Guidelines

All prospective members are required to read and agree to the guidelines. By submitting the membership form, you acknowledge and accept these terms. Expand and read each section before filling out the membership form.

Associate Artist agrees to abide by all Dorland Mountain Arts Colony rules and procedures outlined in Associate Artist Guidelines.

It is required that the executive director be notified in advance and Associate Artist’s visits approved prior to arrival on the grounds.

Associate Artist agrees to respect the privacy of onsite staff, other visiting Associate Artists, and Resident Artists.

Dorland values Associate Artist participation in the annual ‘Open Studios’ and other public events. Local community interaction is welcomed and encouraged as is assistance with stacking firewood and clearing trails.

Associate Artist understands that inclusion in Dorland’s group of Associate Artists is a privilege and a responsibility. Associate Artists choose to support Dorland’s mission statement through assisting as volunteers, involvement as participants in events or advocacy as representatives of Dorland Mountain Artists Colony within the community. The dedication and involvement of the group of Associate Artists is vital to Dorland.

Associate Artists agree to comply with all fire prevention and safety precaution. Noncompliance will result in immediate termination of privileges without a refund.

Smoking is not permitted in any area of the 300-acre Dorland property including the cottages and all buildings. The artist understands that smoking, or creating fire in any non-designated area of the 300-acre Dorland property will result in termination of privileges without a refund.

Associate Artist understands that Dorland is a 300-acre mountainous property, and that with the exception of Dorland’s access road, all other roads and pathways are not paved and have uneven surfaces. Dorland is home to a large variety of flora, fauna, insects, snakes (including rattlesnakes), ground squirrels, rabbits, mice, bob cat, mountain lions and other animals indigenous to the Temecula Valley. There are two small bodies of water, a Reflection Pond and Lake Ticañu, the latter of which is approximately 20 feet deep.

Associate Artist and Dorland acknowledge that the Associate Artist’s use of the area may involve various hazardous materials incident to artwork. The artist shall be responsible for safe storage and lawful disposal of hazardous materials used by the artist, and shall completely remove such materials from the premises at the conclusion of the artist’s visit to Dorland. Artist shall, to the maximum extent allowed under California law, indemnify and hold Dorland harmless, for all costs and claims, including reasonable attorneys’ fees and expert witness fees, incurred by Dorland as a result of claims involving the artist’s use, maintenance, storage, or related activities involving Hazardous Materials.

Dorland shall not be responsible to the undersigned Associate Artist or any third party, for any losses or theft of personal property, damages, or personal injuries sustained by the artist resulting from, or in any way attributable to the visit in or about Dorland premises as a result of using the facilities, any equipment, services, or other provisions. All parties agree that the doctrine of express and primary assumption of risk shall operate as a complete bar to the undersigned Associate Artist’s right to recover damages for injury or death associated with any aspect of art production or presence at Dorland. The undersigned Associate Artist understands that he or she shall have no legal cause of action against Dorland, its staff, board of directors, volunteers, assigns or residents, in the event that he or she is injured by any risk inherent in the creative process or presence at Dorland. Dorland, in providing a retreat and workspace, does not make any warranty of merchantability or fitness for any particular use or purpose, either express or implied. Associate Artist hereby elects to voluntarily enter into this agreement, and to assume all of the risk of injury or damages that may result with any aspect of art production or presence at Dorland.

Associate Artists each contribute an annual fee of $100 (individual) or $150 (family) to be paid via invoice in at the end of each year for the upcoming year of membership. In special circumstances, Dorland’s board of directors may waive this fee to honor individuals for extraordinary contributions of service. These contributions help maintain the building facilities, preserve the wilderness environment and provide community assistance for Resident and Associate Artists and special events.
